The Saboteur - a great little suprprise

What a nice little surprise this turned out to be!  I picked up The Saboteur, recently released on the EA Classic label, without having read any reviews or actually knowing anything about the game. And my word, what fun! It's like GTA set in Word War II, with a bit of Assassin's Creed mixed into it.

You play as Irishman, Sean Devlin, a racer and mechanic. After being cheated out of a win during the Saarbrücken Grand Prix by German Kurt Dierker, you and your friend, Jules Rousseau, goes to sabotage his car. But things don't go as planned and the two of you are caught and interrogated, with Dierker believing you are British spies. He kills Jules but you manage to escape, only to find that Germany is moving forward their invasion forces. You race to save your friends and head off to France.

In France you help the French Resistance as well as the British in the fight against the Nazis, ultimately pursuing Dierker so you can get your revenge.

Sean is quite the nimble little fellow and you get to scale buildings and travel across Paris via the rooftops, jumping from roof to roof and sliding along wires from one building to the next. It's well done, spectacular and scary at times but always great fun. You get main and side missions to do from various people in the Resistance, anything from assassinating Nazi officers, infiltrating and blowing up buildings, to rescue missions. It's very similar to Grand Theft Auto in this way.

Completing the main missions moves the story line forward and takes you closer to Dierker.

The game has a great feel to it. Heavily oppressed areas are completely grey scale with only a bit of colour like red or blue. Dark and dreary it carries the mood over perfectly. Completing missions allows you to liberate certain areas, bringing back the colour and the sunshine.

Ammo, guns and upgrades are available on the black market and you're also able to collect cars and participate in street racing.

The game is available for PC, XBox 360 and PS3. It was release in 2009 but is still great to play. I highly recommend it!
